I got the red windmill quilt bound today and stacked it with the other homeless quilts. And yesterday I received a new Accu-quilt Go! die and pulled some fabrics for the next homeless quilt.
This will be an hourglass quilt and it will be scrappy. I cut a couple of fabrics and pieced them together. I think this will be another quick one -- the blocks are 6" finished. So then I figured out how many I need and pulled the lights and started cutting them. I have 120 of them cut so far - need 260 of lights and 260 of the darks, but the Go Big cutter makes the cutting a lot easier and faster.
I've had the cutter for a few years -- Christmas present to myself. I rarely use it -- probably an expensive toy. But, it really does make short work of cutting shapes for a homeless quilt. We made a couple of kid size tumbler quilts for the homeless a few years ago. The girls had fun piecing them and it didn't take long to cut them out. There is some waste of fabric, but at this point, I'm trying to use up stash and the waste isn't that bad as I'm pulling the light fabrics.
And yes, even though I'm trying to use up my fabric, I am still buying new stuff! Sunshine Stitches picks a color each month and offers any fabric with that color in it at 20% off. This month is blue. I usually buy 4 yards for backings for homeless quilt, but yesterday I bought a couple of yards of different blues since my stash of blues is not as large as it used to be. I will be using some of it for the hourglass quilt. I also buy backing fabrics on sale at Quilters General Store in Rockford when I go there. It is so much nicer to just piece one piece of fabric for a backing than what I used to have to do -- use two or more fabrics to piece together from donated fabric. It is truly a pleasure to use quilt shop quality fabric!
Until next time....blessings.
